Just Say Yes
Just Say Yes.
I laced up my tennis shoes and headed towards the door for a nice long Saturday morning run. Selected my playlist and slipped in my earbuds. Good to go…. almost. Just as I opened the front door to head out, I was caught. “Mommy, Mommy, Mommy!! Are you going for a run!?!? Can I go with you? Please, please pleeeeeeeeeease!?!?” My oldest daughter looked up at me with those pretty blue eyes and adorable freckles.
I thought for a moment. I thought of how much I was looking forward to just tuning out and enjoying the quiet. I thought of all the chores she should be working on. But in that moment I also heard something else. “You get one life”. You get ONE Saturday morning in the middle of November to say yes to the beautiful freckle faced 9 year old just hungry for a little adventure and some fun with her momma. She wasn’t begging for a toy, or a piece of candy, or an outfit. What she wanted most in this very moment was to be with me. SO there was only one answer. I said, “YES.”
And you know what? It was the BEST part of my day. Did I run as fast? Log that extra mile I planned on? Nope. But I saw a smile as wide as a slice of watermelon across the face of someone I love with my whole heart, and that fed my soul. She grabbed her headphones as well and we danced through the neighborhood mouthing lyrics to our favorite jams along the way. And we came back closer. Money in the bank of her heart and mine.
I snapped a few pictures of her along the way because this “Addie smile” as we call it comes out only when she’s truly having the biggest blast. And I couldn’t stop staring at it. Couldn’t escape the thought that the days are speeding by. The days where my kids greatest desire to be right by my side are fleeting. It reminded me to never say no. Not while I have the chance to say yes.
